Turkey’s first electric locomotive goes into service

TÜRASAŞ Eskişehir Regional Directorate Digital Transformation Office decided to transform the locomotive systems into a digital platform first in line with the road map it determined as a result of the studies it carried out.

In this context, the design and working algorithms of all electrical-electronic control systems in Turkey’s first domestic and national Diesel Electric Locomotive DE10000 were developed by TÜRASAŞ Eskişehir Regional Directorate R&D Center.

Real-time data obtained from TLMS (Türasaş Locomotive Monitoring System), which is a part of the electrical-electronic control systems, and the sub-systems of the DE10000 National Diesel Electric Maneuvering Locomotive; The software was transferred to the machinist via HMIs (Human Machine Interface) with user interfaces in UIC612 standards, which were developed by the personnel of TÜRASAŞ Eskişehir Regional Directorate. In addition, by means of these software, around 200 data belonging to the related subsystems can be used for remote monitoring, diagnostics and recording purposes.

With TLMS, the information of units such as Vehicle Control Unit, Traction Control Unit, Diesel Engine Control Unit, Cooling Control Unit, Brake Control Unit are displayed. In addition, the availability information of the conditions regarding starting, traction, diesel engine run, stop, idling commands, current, torque, speed, temperature, skid information of traction motors, mechanic control inputs and some specific additional data of all systems can be displayed.

Benefits of TLMS and Vehicle Control System in DE1000 Locomotive

Thanks to the digitalization studies, the interaction between the mechanic and the locomotive has become much more ergonomic compared to the analog systems in old locomotives. In addition, data constituting statistical value regarding fault records, specific alarm conditions and locomotive usage habits of the mechanic will be recorded. Thanks to TLMS, which will make testing and fault finding processes easier in locomotive development, new system integration, fault repair and maintenance/revision processes, cost and time savings were made in the aforementioned processes, making it even easier to create the product in accordance with customer requests on time.

Thanks to TLMS developed by TÜRASAŞ Eskişehir Regional Directorate R&D Center, the necessary experiences for the creation of the new generation TKYS (Train Control and Management Systems), accessing the locomotive data via HMIs and integrating the hardware supporting GSM (Global System Mobile) technology. By providing remote access to the relevant data, the infrastructure of the “cloud” (cloud) and “Internet of Things” (IoT) technologies within the scope of “big data” management in order to carry out statistical studies on the relevant locomotives, within the scope of “Predictive Maintenance” issues, the requirements of Industry 4.0 The necessary experience has been gained for the establishment of the necessary infrastructure to ensure compliance.

Systems intended to be developed in the short, medium and long term

TÜRASAŞ Eskişehir Region Region offers TKYS with high domesticity and added value to be used in diesel-electric shunting locomotives in the short term, hybrid locomotives, electric and diesel-electric mainline and shunting locomotives, diesel-hydraulic locomotives and National YHT (High Speed Train) in the medium term. It is aimed to be produced with minimum costs by the R&D Center of the Directorate.

On the other hand, sensors, sensor reader electronic cards, GSM equipment to be added and “big data” management to be gained in relation to the “Predictive Maintenance” studies to be carried out by TÜRASAŞ Eskişehir Regional Directorate R&D Center within the scope of Industry 4.0 compliance processes in the medium term, Thanks to the cloud” (cloud) and “Internet of Things” (IoT) experiences, statistical data collection studies can be carried out to detect malfunctions in advance.

It will be possible for academics and entrepreneurs to apply the world’s most advanced practices on the locomotives of TÜRASAŞ Eskişehir Regional Directorate. In the long run, all requirements for “Predictive Maintenance” will be fulfilled, and locomotive maintenance/repair costs will be minimized, thanks to the statistical data collected over a long period of time regarding Industry 4.0 compliance processes and the expertise gained.
