The “Original Engine”, which is the first engine designed and manufactured from scratch for the locomotive in Turkey and whose license rights are also in TÜBİTAK, was introduced. Industry and Technology Minister Mustafa Varank, stating that Turkey has become an exporter and supplier of rail systems, said, “The Original Engine, which we are promoting today, is the first and only locomotive engine designed and produced in our country, and whose license rights belong to our country 100 percent at the same time. carries,” he said.

“It can also be produced with 12 and 16 cylinders, depending on the need”
TÜRASAŞ General Manager Mustafa Metin Yazar explained that the company fulfills the duty of an umbrella organization for the companies in the sector by designing the railway vehicles and critical subsystems that the country and the region need, nationally and locally, and producing them with local suppliers.

Stating that they carried out many critical projects at the point of technological independence of the country, especially the E5000 Electric Mainline Locomotive, Gaziray Electric Commuter Train and 225 kilometers high speed train projects, such as the train control and management system, traction motor, which they brought to Turkey with TÜBİTAK RUTE, the author said. He stated that TÜRASAŞ, with its facility, production infrastructure and experienced engineer workforce, took part in the diesel engine project, which was funded 100 percent by TÜBİTAK KAMAG, as a manufacturer and an organization that commercializes the project outputs. The author stated that engineering, design and production studies have been initiated for 2 different diesel engines with critical importance under the title of the project, “One of these two different diesel engines is the modernized version of diesel engines such as TLM 16, which is still being produced by TÜRASAŞ, with a fuel improvement target of 12 percent. and the other is Özgün Motor, which was gathered for its launch today.” Stating that Özgün Motor, supported by TÜRASAŞ with its experience in diesel engines, is a design with an engineering infrastructure that can be produced with 8 cylinders in the first stage, and then as 12 and 16 cylinders according to the needs, the author said, “For the commercialization of Özgün Motor, TÜRASAŞ Eskişehir currently established in the region. “Additional requirements for engine capacity have been defined and preparations for mass production are continuing. The engines to be produced are primarily used in locomotives, then modernized and used in ships,” he said.

“It is the first and only locomotive engine of our country”
Minister of Industry and Technology Mustafa Varank, emphasizing that Turkey has reached very important levels in the domestic development of engine technologies with the R&D projects it carries out, said, “The Original Engine, which we are promoting today, is the first designed and produced from scratch in our country, and whose license rights also belong to our country 100 percent. “It is the only locomotive engine. 100 percent of the engine produced here was developed here, 90 percent of its parts were produced in our country. It has 3,600 different parts,” he said.

Stating that the engine can be produced in 3 different configurations with 8, 12 or 16 cylinders and up to 2,700 horsepower, Varank said that the mass production will be carried out by Turkey Rail System Vehicles Industry A.Ş. (TÜRASAŞ) and its use will be expanded. Mentioning that the Özgün Motor family can power not only locomotives, but also generators, work machines, land and sea vehicles, Varank said, “Özgün Motor, which is a cornerstone in the development of the engine industry in our country, is more cost-effective than both its class and the locomotive engines in TCDD’s inventory. It has a more efficient, more efficient and environmentally friendly design that consumes less fuel.

Emphasizing that Özgün Motor is a platform where future technologies can be applied, Varank said, “We should not look at it as an internal combustion diesel engine. Our friends have already started working on the use of the same
engine design with hydrogen. We can make this engine work with hydrogen very easily. “There are currently no commercially available hydrogen engines on the market. Turkey could become one of the leading countries here. This shows
how superior our work is strategically.” used the phrase. Minister Varank underlined that they are determined to make Turkey a country where critical technologies are designed, produced and exported in line with the vision of the “National Technology Move”, and said:

“We successfully carry out projects of strategic importance that will be a pioneer in the transformation of mobility, and work in cooperation with our stakeholders. We now have trams that we can produce locally and nationally, driverless metro vehicles, national electric train sets, locomotives, suburban sets, passenger and freight wagons. In addition, we have a national signaling system. and we continue our work on the development of high-speed trains without interruption. Our country has become a net exporter of rail system vehicle parts and components as of 2021.”

“It will create an added value of 320 million euros”
Reminding that TÜRASAŞ and RUTE could come together and develop the signaling system with ASELSAN in the inner city lines, Varank said that an added value of 320 million Euros could be created in the next 5 years.

Noting that the assembly of the E5000 electric main line locomotive, which they developed in cooperation with the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, has been completed, Minister Varank said, “Hopefully, we will introduce it with
our Minister soon. We will have developed our 100 percent electric main line locomotive ourselves. In this sense, we will meet an important need.”

Stating that they continue to carry out dozens and hundreds of projects like this, Varank continued his speech as follows:

“You know, there is a phrase that veteran opponents make very often. When we develop a platform product, we ask, ‘Where is this domestic, is its engine domestic?’ They ask. Yes, we answer them today; we have developed our own unique engine,
our original engine to be used in rail systems. We will start it soon, and we will be able to proudly say that the engine is local. I express my gratitude to everyone who contributed to the project. I express my special gratitude to Mr. Adil because
he is with the Ministry of Transport. “The Ministry of Industry and Technology has achieved a good synergy in RUTE. We planned our project for 4 years, we completed it in 4 years.”

Stating that they are working efficiently and that they will share such success stories with the public, Minister Varank said, “We will bring the works that our citizens will be proud of to everyone’s agenda. Our agenda is real technology.

About the Original Engine Development Project
The “Original Engine Development Project” supported by the TÜBİTAK Research Support Programs Presidency (ARDEB) 1007 Program was carried out in partnership with TÜBİTAK RUTE, TÜRASAŞ, Marmara University and Unusual Engineering.

Özgün Motor has the distinction of being the first engine designed and produced from scratch in Turkey for the locomotive, and whose license rights are also in TÜBİTAK, in Turkey.

The 160 Series Original Engine Family in the field of rail transportation has the highest power obtained from 1 liter engine volume.

The 8-cylinder 1200 horsepower engine, the first product of the 160 series engine family design, whose license rights belong to TÜBİTAK, meets the emission limits set on a global scale.

The original engine, which will be a solution in power classes up to 2700 horsepower with V8, V12 and V16 engine family options, can be used easily in locomotives, generators and many “surface ships”.
